THINGS MYSTERIOUS by Matthew Chabin

July 2, 2015

51QY-W6VPFL._SS300_         At first, I thought the author, Chabin, was taking me back to World War II event and the time of the Nazi’s. That flashed before my mind due to Dasan’s (the protagonist) description of his supervisor as the sunny little Nazi, Eastich. However, that image soon changed as I read deeper into a highly complex story that dealt with a man who was suffering from a terminal illness––the end station being death.

Dasan, a man who was stationed in Iraq, ended his commitment with the United States Army and found that his marriage was also over. He went back to college but the changes as he said between ‘Philosophy and Chemistry,’ were too remarkable for him. He quit during the second semester and became a security guard. On the way to work he encountered a woman and the book sounded like an ordinary story of man meets woman on a subway or train or bus, but it is not. The complexity begins and becomes real as we are allowed to look into Dasan’s mind.

Chabin shows us that something is wrong with Dasan and takes us within his brain and his thought life to show us his struggles. The story was realistically told and kept me wondering what was wrong with Dasan.

THINGS MYSTERIOUS, by Matthew Chabin, held my interest. It is indeed a book worth reading.
